The Major Accounting Bodies

With such a large number of accounting bodies all actively promoting their Qualifications and Services, the decision of which to choose has become increasingly difficult. There are four professional accounting qualifications in the UK - ACA, CIMA, ACCA and AAT. These qualifications are given to individuals by the various professional accounting organisations in the UK.

ACCA- Association of Certified Chartered Accountants

ACCA (the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants) is the largest and fastest-growing international accountancy body with 240,000 students and 105,000 members in 170 countries.

ICAEW- Institute of Chartered Accountants in England & Wales

The Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW) is the largest professional accountancy body in Europe. They have over 127,000 members, 15,000 of whom live and work outside the UK. There are currently around 10,000 students registered with us who are at various stages of their training, and over 3,000 qualify for full membership every year.

CIMA- Chartered Institute of Management Accountants

CIMA - The Chartered Institute of Management Accountants - is a leading membership body that offers an internationally recognised professional qualification in management accountancy, which focuses on accounting for business.The CIMA Certificate in Business Accounting offers you a solid grounding in the basics of accounting and business. It is also a stepping stone towards the CIMA Professional qualification.

AAT- Association of Accounting Technicians

The Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT) is an established and well-respected professional membership body with over 100,000 student, full and fellow members worldwide. The AAT's qualification and membership develop relevant and practical accounting and finance skills for life.

ICAS – Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland

The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland ( ICAS ) is the world's first professional body of accountants, receiving its Royal Charter in 1854. It was the first to adopt the designation "Chartered Accountant" and the designatory letters CA are still an exclusive privilege in the UK for members of the Scottish Institute.

CIPFA- Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy

CIPFA is one of the leading professional accountancy bodies in the UK and the only one which specialises in the public sector. It is responsible for the education and training of professional accountants and for their regulation through the setting and monitoring of professional standards.

AIA- Association of International Accountants

The Association of International Accountants is an international accountancy and accountancy examining body, founded in 1928. The Association is one of five statutorily recognised qualifying bodies (RQBs) in the United Kingdom for company auditors under the Companies Act 1989.

CIB- Chartered Institute of Bankers

Through its Faculty structure the Institute develops and delivers a range of appropriate qualifications, for which the CIB acts as examining and awarding body, to the wider financial services community.

CII- Chartered Insurance Institute

The CII is the premier professional organisation for those working in the insurance and financial services industry. It is dedicated to promoting higher standards of competence and integrity through the provision of relevant qualifications for employees at all levels and across all sectors of the industry. The CII has over 65,000 members and has been at the forefront in setting professional standards for the insurance industry for over a century.

ICM- Institute of Credit Management

The ICM is the largest professional credit management organisation in Europe. Its 8,700 members hold appointments throughout industry and commerce - in trade, consumer and export credit as well as in related activities such as collections, credit reporting, credit insurance and insolvency practice. Founded in 1939, the ICM is the centre of expertise in the United Kingdom for all matters relating to credit management.

ABE- Association of Business Executives

The Association of Business Executives was founded in 1973 by a group of industrialists, educationalists and politicians as a non-profit making institution. It is a market leader in the cost-effective provision of quality assured British management education leading to awards which are valued in their own right, but which are also recognised as an accepted route onto the later stages of a number of UK and overseas professional or university qualifications.
